Android Auto 15.9 strings hint at Google Cast support, letting passengers beam music and video from Android phones to the car display wirelessly, like CarPlay.

Android Auto makes hooking up a smartphone to a car’s infotainment system easier than ever. There’s no need for an SD card or a USB drive anymore—just plug in a Galaxy phone and play music from the device or over the internet. Looking ahead, Android Auto may even let passengers cast their own media to the car’s display wirelessly.

Researchers at 9To5Google spotted strings in the Android Auto app (version 15.9.655104) that point to Google Cast support on Android phones. The Media Router platform, which handles media streaming, would let other Android devices see the connected phone as a casting source. In practice, passengers could beam music or video from their own smartphones to the car’s screen.

A similar capability already exists in Apple CarPlay, where a passenger connects to the iPhone via a QR code to play media on the car’s display. For Android Auto, this would mark a meaningful first step toward bringing passenger-friendly media casting into the mix.
