Windows 11's January 2026 security update causes shutdown and sleep issues, with Microsoft confirming a bug. Learn the temporary fix via command line and other affected features.

Windows 11's January 2026 security update contains a strange bug that prevents users from shutting down or putting their computers to sleep. After installing update KB5073455, attempts to shut down or hibernate the device result in an unexpected reboot instead.

Microsoft has confirmed the issue, noting it only affects Windows 11 Enterprise and IoT versions on devices with Secure Launch enabled. Secure Launch is a mechanism that protects the boot process from firmware-level attacks.

While the company works on a fix, a temporary workaround exists: users can shut down via the command line. Open the Start menu, type CMD and press Enter, then enter the command shutdown /s /t 0 and press Enter.

This method is safer than forcing a shutdown by holding the power button, which risks data loss or file corruption. However, there's currently no reliable alternative for hibernation, as the shutdown /h command may not work.

The January update package also causes connection issues with cloud services. Some users cannot authenticate with Azure Virtual Desktop or access Windows 365 through the Windows app. Microsoft suggests temporary solutions: use the Remote Desktop client for Azure Virtual Desktop and the web version of the Windows app for Windows 365.

Users report that Windows failures have become more frequent lately, with some recalling Windows 7 as a more stable period. Some speculate that the active integration of Copilot into system development might be a factor, though there's no official confirmation. Microsoft continues its investigation and promises a final fix soon.
