WhatsApp is updating its GIF search by replacing Tenor with Klipy by July 2026, ensuring seamless user experience without action required. Learn about the change.
WhatsApp is preparing to change one of its familiar communication features—GIF search. In future versions of the messenger, the Tenor service will be replaced by Klipy as one of the standard GIF providers. This change was discovered in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS, where active work on the new integration has already been confirmed.
The reason for the switch is practical. Tenor has officially announced it will shut down its API on June 30, 2026, and has already stopped accepting new developers. To prevent users from suddenly losing GIF search functionality, WhatsApp is proactively preparing an alternative. That alternative will be the Klipy platform, which offers an extensive library of GIFs, memes, and stickers and has its own official API.
For users, the transition will be seamless. WhatsApp will automatically move everyone who previously used Tenor over to Klipy without any action required from account holders. The only visible difference will be a Klipy label on sent GIFs, indicating the new content source.
Currently, WhatsApp supports GIF search through Giphy and Tenor, with service availability depending on region and account settings. Users of Giphy won't be affected by the changes, while those who only had access to Tenor will be redirected to Klipy. Other popular platforms, including Discord, have already begun making similar transitions.
WhatsApp hasn't announced an exact implementation date yet, but the replacement of Tenor with Klipy is expected to be completed before July 1, 2026, to avoid any disruptions to the GIF feature.
