Samsung One UI 9: new design with translucent elements and blur effects

Samsung is reportedly planning a significant visual overhaul for its Galaxy smartphones and tablets with the upcoming One UI 9, based on Android 17. According to leaks, the company aims to build upon the design direction established in One UI 7 and 8.5 by incorporating more translucent elements and blur effects. This approach is intended to create a sense of depth and layering within the interface.

Sources indicate that Google is already testing "glass-like" visual effects in Android 17, which Samsung is likely to adapt for One UI 9. The update is expected to feature semi-transparent panels with background blurring in areas like quick settings, the notification panel, the power menu, and volume controls. Wallpapers will remain visible behind these elements, while interface components will automatically adjust their colors to match the desktop theme through the Dynamic Color system, known to Galaxy users as Color Palette.

These visual changes won't be a direct copy of Apple's Liquid Glass, introduced in iOS 26. Instead, the Android version is described as more restrained and functional, focusing on readability and interface logic rather than decorative flair. This design philosophy should integrate smoothly with the signature One UI style while maintaining the ergonomic familiarity Samsung users expect.

Beyond aesthetics, Android 17 may bring functional enhancements that will carry over to One UI 9. These could include advanced screen recording capabilities with touch display, on-screen drawing over video, and flexible audio source selection. Another anticipated feature is a simple built-in mechanism for locking individual apps, something Galaxy users have been requesting for years.

The first developer beta of Android 17 is expected in the first quarter of this year, with a final release scheduled for mid-2026. If the leaks prove accurate, One UI 9 could represent one of Samsung's most noticeable visual updates in recent years.
