Waymo's robotaxi rides in the U.S. are becoming more affordable compared to Uber and Lyft, with prices converging as Waymo lowers costs and traditional services raise theirs.

Waymo's robotaxi rides in the U.S. still cost more than similar trips with Uber or Lyft, but the price gap is closing fast. That's according to analysts at Obi, a service that compares taxi prices and wait times in real-time across San Francisco. Waymo's average fare now sits around $19.70, while Uber offers comparable rides for about $17.50, and Lyft for $15.50.

Experts note the price convergence stems from two factors: Waymo has slightly lowered its trip costs, while traditional taxi services have raised theirs. Back in spring 2025, the gap was more pronounced. Since then, Waymo rides have become about 3.6% cheaper, whereas Uber's prices have risen by 12% and Lyft's by roughly 7%. This shift means robotaxis are gradually shedding their reputation as an overly expensive alternative.

The report also mentions Tesla's service, which remains a small player for now. It operates with a safety driver because fully autonomous mode in California hasn't been approved for it yet. Waymo, meanwhile, shows an average wait time of about 5.7 minutes—on par with Uber and Lyft. Tesla's wait time exceeds 15 minutes due to its limited fleet of around 156 vehicles.
