Google expands Gemini AI in Google Maps to include walking and cycling, offering hands-free assistance, local recommendations, and real-time updates for all travel types.

Google is expanding Gemini's capabilities within Google Maps. The built-in AI assistant will now work not only during car navigation but also while walking and cycling. Originally launched in November primarily for drivers, Google is making the feature more versatile for all types of travel.

During walking routes, Gemini can essentially become a personal tour guide. Users can ask questions about the area they're in, find out which nearby restaurants have the best ratings, or search for interesting places along the way. Recommendations will be based on up-to-date Google Maps data about the real world, making the suggestions more useful and contextual.

The new integration will be particularly convenient for cyclists, as the AI assistant can operate hands-free. Gemini can provide estimated arrival times, remind users about upcoming meetings, and even send messages to contacts—allowing riders to stay focused on the road.

The feature has already started rolling out globally on iOS and Android in all regions where Gemini is officially available. However, like most Google updates, the deployment is gradual, so some users might not see the new functionality immediately.
