NFC Forum's 2026 roadmap promises 8x faster data transfer, enhanced security, and wireless charging up to 3W for smartphones and wearables.
NFC technology is gearing up for a major upgrade that promises to transform how smartphones and wearable devices operate. According to the NFC Forum's roadmap for 2026, the next version of NFC will be capable of transmitting data eight times faster than current standards. For users, this translates to instant contactless actions: a single tap could handle payment, apply discounts, and deliver a digital receipt—all simultaneously.
The update will also improve compatibility between reading modes, reduce failed tap attempts, and enhance security. For the first time, an NFC controller security profile will be published, offering protection against potential post-quantum computing threats. Additionally, plans include next-generation wireless charging with power up to 3 watts, suitable for small devices like headphones and smartwatches.
NFC-based digital keys will gain new capabilities too: integration with Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology will expand the technology's applications and support modern security standards. Samsung, as a working group participant and leader of the NFC Forum's target group, may implement these enhanced features in future Galaxy smartphones and wearables, including the Galaxy S25 and next-generation smartwatches.
The increased data transfer speeds and new NFC functions could fundamentally change familiar smartphone use cases—from payments and loyalty programs to managing digital keys and wirelessly charging accessories. This positions NFC not just as a convenient technology, but as an essential component of the Galaxy ecosystem.
