Apple's foldable iPhone plans are affecting the supply chain, with Samsung Display considering expanding OLED panel production for Apple's orders, starting in 2026.

South Korean media reports suggest Apple's plans to expand its foldable iPhone lineup are already affecting the entire supply chain. After preparing for the launch of the iPhone Fold with a large flexible screen, the company is reportedly considering a compact iPhone Flip as well. In response, Samsung Display is evaluating the need to expand production capacity for foldable OLED panels specifically for Apple's orders.

Samsung Display may invest in additional production lines at its A4 plant in Asan, South Chungcheong Province. This would primarily involve upgrading and expanding processes related to substrate and TFT matrix production for flexible OLEDs. The overall strategy has been formed, with a final decision on investment volume expected after an internal assessment. If the project gets the green light, capital investments could begin as early as the second quarter of 2026.

Simultaneously, Samsung Display is gearing up for mass production of panels for the first foldable iPhone Fold. According to available information, production of OLED screens for this model will start in June at the A3 plant, where a dedicated line for Apple's needs has already been established. Based on screens with a diagonal of around 7 inches, the annual capacity is estimated at approximately 15 million panels.

Analysts believe Apple's entry into the foldable smartphone market could significantly accelerate the development of the entire segment. TrendForce forecasts that in the second half of 2026, with the arrival of the first foldable iPhone, interest in the form factor will grow. By 2027, the market share of foldable devices could exceed 3 percent, up from about 1.6 percent in 2025.
