Toyota introduces the 2027 electric Highlander SUV, offering up to 500 km range, V2L connectivity, and safety features at an affordable price under $50,000.
Toyota has announced it is discontinuing the hybrid version of its iconic Highlander SUV and introducing a fully electric 2027 Highlander. This makes it the company's first three-row electric SUV designed for families and long-distance travel.
For the American market, the electric vehicle comes with two battery options: 77 kWh and 96 kWh. This keeps the starting price under $50,000, making the electric Highlander an affordable choice among three-row SUVs. Despite having a smaller battery capacity than some competitors, optimizations in the powertrain and energy consumption deliver an impressive range of up to 500 km on a single charge.
The 2027 Highlander retains all the safety and comfort features fans love, while adding new capabilities typical of electric vehicles. These include V2L connectivity, which allows the car to serve as a power source for household appliances or device charging in emergencies.
The electric Highlander features an NACS charging port, enabling use of Tesla Supercharger stations for fast charging. The third row of seats now includes USB-C ports, and the folding rear seats expand cargo space, making the vehicle practical for family trips and hauling large items.
Safety remains a top priority: the new Highlander comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, which includes pedestrian detection, dynamic cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and traffic sign recognition. Unlike some competitors, all these systems are included at no extra cost.
Overall, Toyota is taking a significant step in electrifying family SUVs by blending familiar comfort and reliability with modern electric vehicle features and thoughtful energy efficiency. The 2027 Highlander aims to be a dependable and versatile choice for those wanting to switch to electric without compromising on convenience or safety.
