Apple will use four iPhone 17 Pro cameras at Tigers vs. Red Sox, adding unique angles to Friday Night Baseball with Blackmagic Camera, streaming on Apple TV+.
Tonight’s Friday Night Baseball matchup between the Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox is poised to make broadcast history: for the first time, a professional sports telecast will incorporate iPhone cameras. Apple will deploy four iPhone 17 Pro devices to deliver distinctive vantage points from Fenway Park. Whenever the production cuts to an iPhone feed, a Shot on iPhone badge will appear in the corner of the screen — a small cue that quietly underscores the experiment.
The smartphones will be positioned around the ballpark, from the home dugout to the famous Green Monster in left field. One handset will serve as a mobile wireless camera. For capture, Apple is using the Blackmagic Camera app along with the new Blackmagic Camera ProDock. Key settings such as exposure and white balance can be adjusted remotely, and the cameras are expected to run continuously throughout the game. It’s a pragmatic setup that shows how phone-based rigs can slot into live workflows without breaking rhythm.
The broadcast is part of Apple’s partnership with MLB aimed at pushing innovation in sports coverage. The company has previously introduced drones at stadiums, cameras mounted on players’ helmets, and the megalodon system. The game can be watched for free with an Apple TV+ subscription — a reminder that these trials aren’t just tech showcases, but also a way to make the viewing experience feel more immediate.
