Samsung's One UI code reveals the Galaxy Z Wide Fold, a new foldable smartphone with a wider design. Expected to launch in late 2024 as a response to Apple.
Code within Samsung's One UI shell has revealed images of a new foldable smartphone, reportedly called the Galaxy Z Wide Fold. Based on the discovered materials, the company is indeed preparing a device with unusual proportions—its body is noticeably wider horizontally than current Fold series models. The new device is expected to launch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8 in the second half of the year.
Schematics found in the firmware confirm that Samsung is already adapting its software for this new form factor. While the published images are technical and simplified, they provide a clear look at the device's concept. In its folded state, the Wide Fold appears more stretched in width, bringing it closer in design to the long-rumored foldable iPhone.
The Galaxy Z Wide Fold is seen as Samsung's direct response to Apple's potential entry into the foldable smartphone market. In practice, this means the South Korean manufacturer aims to offer an alternative within its own ecosystem, not ceding the initiative to its competitor. This format has appeared on the market before, but Apple could make it mainstream—and Samsung wants to get ahead of that trend.
It remains unclear whether this new form factor will gain popularity or remain a niche experiment. Nevertheless, interest in the device could be high simply due to its novelty—after all, the Galaxy Z TriFold sold out in minutes when it launched. Now, everything will depend on whether Samsung can convince buyers that a wide foldable smartphone isn't just an unusual design, but a genuinely practical everyday solution.
