Xiaomi confirms next-gen XRing 02 SoC, outlines a decade-long chip roadmap and $7B spend. Why it won’t chase annual releases, targeting flagship independence.
Xiaomi has officially confirmed it is developing the next generation of its in-house XRing series processor. The first iteration, XRing 01, debuted in spring 2025 in the Xiaomi 15S Pro and delivered an eye-catching score of more than three million points in AnTuTu. The company is now preparing its successor, provisionally referred to as XRing 02.
In an interview with CNBC, Xiaomi vice president Xu Fei emphasized that, unlike Apple or Qualcomm, the company does not plan to release a new system-on-chip every year. She explained that the focus is on a long-term roadmap and elevating the user experience, noting that Xiaomi is new to this segment and needs time to learn and plan. The stance signals a measured pace over an annual spec-race cadence.
Xiaomi has also announced plans to invest 50 billion yuan (about $7 billion) in developing its own chips over the next decade. Cooperation with Qualcomm and MediaTek will continue for now, as the brand’s flagship phones still use their platforms—a pragmatic bridge while the homegrown program scales.
According to company leadership, the SoC business may take roughly a decade to reach break-even. The goal, however, is unambiguous: deliver premium-tier performance and achieve independence from third-party suppliers. Framing the effort on a ten-year horizon sets expectations and underscores that control over the silicon stack is the destination.
