An enthusiast has successfully booted Windows 3.1X, an operating system from the early 90s, on a modern PC with a Ryzen 9 9900X processor and an RTX 5060 Ti graphics card. The gap of more than 30 years between the hardware and software proved no obstacle: the system actually ran directly on the bare metal, without emulators or virtual machines.
The key was an Asus motherboard supporting classic BIOS and CSM compatibility mode. This allowed proper interaction with the old OS. The installation was as authentic as possible—using original 3.5-inch floppy disks with Windows 3.1X loaded via a USB-connected floppy drive.
Initial difficulties emerged when launching the graphical interface: the system crashed due to conflicts with modern hardware in Enhanced Mode. The solution was switching to the simpler Standard Mode, which provided basic functionality. Later, the enthusiast managed to partially restore the enhanced mode by adding special drivers and patches.
Graphics and audio required separate attention. Using the VBESVGA driver, they successfully displayed the image in Full HD resolution, while a rare compatible PCI sound card was used for audio. Ultimately, the project demonstrated that even extremely outdated systems can be adapted to modern hardware—albeit with some compromises.
