Google updates Gemini AI to support mental health with crisis hotline access, professional referrals, and protective measures for users, including children and teens.
Google has announced a series of updates to its Gemini AI, designed to support user mental health. The company emphasizes that a responsible approach to AI can positively impact people's mental well-being.
Now, if a chat shows signs of a crisis related to suicide or self-harm, Gemini displays a "one-tap" interface. This allows immediate connection to a hotline via call, chat, message, or website navigation. The card remains active throughout the conversation and aims to encourage users to seek help.
For cases where a user shows a need for mental health information, the updated "Help is available" module offers quick access to clinical professionals. The module was developed with experts to ensure effective support and proper referral to professionals.
Gemini models are trained to recognize signs of mental health issues and direct users to real resources. The system's responses are formulated to encourage seeking help without endorsing dangerous behavior, such as self-harm. It also correctly distinguishes between subjective experiences and objective facts, avoiding support for false beliefs.
For children and teens, additional protective measures are in place, including preventing Gemini from presenting itself as human or attributing human qualities, limiting wording that mimics closeness to avoid emotional dependency, and protecting against bullying and other forms of harassment.
