Google is testing separate ringtones for each SIM card in Android Canary, potentially arriving in Android 17. This feature would enhance user experience on dual-SIM smartphones.
Google appears to be finally tackling one of Android's most obvious yet still missing features: separate ringtones for each SIM card. Hints of this have surfaced in the Android Canary test build, where code strings directly point to such functionality.
Dual-SIM smartphones have long been commonplace, but the system has so far limited users to a single shared ringtone. Meanwhile, some brands like Motorola have already implemented similar features in their custom interfaces. Now, there's a chance it could arrive in Android itself. According to the discovered descriptions, users will be able to assign a unique ringtone to each SIM card—both physical and eSIM. This would let them instantly know which number is receiving a call without having to glance at the screen.
The feature isn't active yet, even in the test version, so it's too early to discuss timing. Still, if development continues, this addition could debut in Android 17. Given how many years users have waited for it, implementing such a simple yet useful option could significantly enhance the everyday smartphone experience.
