New leaks reveal that Apple and Samsung are betting on fundamentally different approaches to foldable smartphone development. While the Korean manufacturer continues to evolve the familiar "clamshell" format, the first iPhone Fold may offer a thinner and more refined design that's already influencing the market and inspiring competitors.
According to leaked mock-up images created for accessory makers, the foldable iPhone will feature an ultra-thin body—under 5mm when unfolded. The device will also have slightly rounded edges reminiscent of current iPhone models, along with an unusual button layout: volume buttons will be positioned on the top of the casing, while the power button will likely integrate with a Touch ID scanner.
The hinge design draws particular attention. Renders show a protrusion at the back that may relate to the folding mechanism's special features. It remains unclear whether this solution will make it to the final version, but it's already raising questions among analysts and users. Images of cases have also surfaced, hinting at possible magnetic charging support, though this feature hasn't been confirmed yet.
Against this backdrop, it's clear Apple and Samsung are taking different paths in foldable development. The Galaxy Z Fold will continue refining an already familiar concept, while the iPhone Fold may bring more radical changes. Apple's new offering is expected to sit in the premium segment with a price above $2,000, making it one of the company's most ambitious projects in recent years.
