A bug in Windows File History causes backup failures even when the drive is connected. Learn about the issue and workarounds.
Microsoft has confirmed a bug in the File History feature on Windows 10 and Windows 11 that causes backup failures. Users started receiving a notification asking them to reconnect the drive, even when the drive is actually connected and working.
The issue stems from the system mistakenly believing the drive has been disconnected for a long period. This can happen with both external USB drives and network folders. As a result, the backup process stops, and the user only sees a warning with no explanation.
Microsoft notes that existing files and backups are not damaged. The bug affects the reliability and continuity of new backups.
As a temporary workaround, users are advised to check the external drive connection and wait for the next automatic backup or trigger it manually. For network shares, the recommendation is to reselect the location in File History settings and then start the backup manually.
No timeline for a permanent fix has been announced.
