A strange bug in Android Auto is causing Gemini AI to revert to Google Assistant, frustrating users. Learn about workarounds and when a fix is coming.
A strange bug in Android Auto is causing the new Gemini AI assistant to automatically revert to Google Assistant. The issue affects some users and creates confusion in the system's operation.
Since Gemini was introduced into Android Auto, feedback has been mixed. But now, some users are reporting that the assistant simply disappears. More complaints are popping up on Reddit and forums, and in some cases, switching back to Gemini is impossible.
One user noted that everything worked fine until an update to version 16.7, after which the system started using Google Assistant. Trying to fix it by clearing the cache, changing settings, or rebooting devices didn't help. There are also reports of the bug appearing on version 16.6.
A Google representative confirmed the problem has been passed to the development team, stating they have forwarded the user's report to the rest of the team and are in touch via email for further assistance.
As a temporary workaround, users are advised to go into the digital assistant settings in Android Auto, switch from Gemini to Assistant, and then switch back to Gemini. This has restored AI functionality for some.
It's not yet known when a full fix will be released, but the issue has been acknowledged and is being worked on.
