OpenAI Developing AI Agent Smartphone with MediaTek, Expected 2027

OpenAI is developing an AI agent smartphone with no apps, set for 2027. It features a MediaTek Dimensity 9600 chip, deep hardware-software integration, and continuous behavior analysis.

OpenAI is actively developing its own smartphone concept, with AI agents at the heart of the experience. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the device could enter mass production as early as the first half of 2027. MediaTek is the leading candidate to supply the processor, which is expected to be a specialized chip based on the Dimensity 9600, fabricated on TSMC's N2P 2nm process.

The hardware is purpose-built for AI workloads. It will feature a dual-block NPU architecture designed for complex, multi-layered computations. LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage are expected to minimize latency during continuous AI processing.

The camera gets a significant upgrade: an enhanced ISP will improve high-dynamic-range scene processing, which is crucial for real-time environmental analysis.

What truly sets the device apart is its reimagined interaction model. Instead of traditional apps, users will rely on AI agents that execute tasks directly from requests and contextual cues. This demands deep hardware-software integration, giving OpenAI full control over the system without the constraints of third-party platforms.

The smartphone is designed to continuously analyze user behavior and adapt accordingly. Simple tasks will be handled locally, while more complex ones will tap into cloud AI services.

Security is also a priority, with mechanisms like pKVM and hardware hashing planned. If the project stays on track, total shipments in 2027–2028 could reach around 30 million units.
