Samsung considers BOE for Galaxy S27 displays to cut costs

Samsung may use BOE displays in the Galaxy S27 to reduce costs, but quality concerns arise. Find out how this dual-supplier strategy could affect the flagship lineup.

Samsung is still searching for ways to cut costs on the upcoming Galaxy S27 series, as component prices rise and the memory market remains unstable. A key area of cost optimization is a dual-supplier strategy for displays, which could have a noticeable impact on the final quality of the devices.

According to industry sources, the company is considering tapping Chinese manufacturer BOE as a second supplier for OLED panels. Under this plan, the base Galaxy S27 model could use screens from either Samsung Display or an outside supplier, reducing production costs.

But this approach comes with risks. Panels from different suppliers could cause noticeable differences in color reproduction, brightness, and overall image stability across identical phone models. For a flagship lineup, that's a sensitive issue, since buyers expect consistent quality.

BOE has been a presence in the supply chains of major brands for a while, including Apple, but mostly as a backup supplier. That said, there have been occasional concerns about production stability and meeting high mass-market standards. Nonetheless, Chinese manufacturers are steadily strengthening their foothold in the industry and are already found in Samsung's mid-range devices.

Meanwhile, Samsung finds itself in a tough spot: its own display division can't supply panels at a lower internal cost, and rising memory and component costs are adding further pressure on margins.

It's worth noting that a final decision on working with BOE hasn't been reached yet. Negotiations continue, and the final supply arrangement for the Galaxy S27 could still change. Still, the mere fact that such a scenario is being discussed shows just how much smartphone makers are having to balance price and quality right now.
