The new Sony Xperia 1 VIII smartphone has become a topic of discussion not because of its cameras or price, but due to an unexpected discrepancy in its official body specifications. Observers noticed that the actual thickness of the device may differ from the manufacturer's data.
According to Sony, the Xperia 1 VIII measures 8.3 mm thick. However, insider OnLeaks published his own measurements, which put the device closer to 8.59 mm. The difference is less than a third of a millimeter—small in itself, but enough to spark debate about how manufacturers measure smartphones.
One theory is that Sony only measured the central part of the metal frame, excluding the slightly protruding glass panels on the front and back. This could explain why the official figure is lower than what users actually feel.
Similar disputes have occurred with other manufacturers when promotional materials listed the minimum thickness without accounting for protruding elements. In the case of the Xperia, the issue is particularly noticeable because the discrepancy involves the body shape itself, not just the camera bump.
Sony has not yet issued an official comment, so the exact measurement method remains unknown. Still, for most users, a difference of a few tenths of a millimeter is unlikely to be noticeable in everyday use.
