Daily power-offs may not extend a phone’s life. Modern smartphones are built to stay on, while full restarts can create extra load.
Turning off a smartphone every day, which many people see as a healthy habit, is unlikely to extend the device’s lifespan. In fact, this kind of care can create extra load for it. According to BGR, regular cycles of full shutdown and startup may sometimes increase the risk of early problems with the gadget.
The publication notes that some users switch off their phone at night because they believe the device “rests” and wears out less. But modern smartphones are designed for long periods of continuous operation, so shutting them down constantly without a clear reason does not bring much benefit.
Every time the phone turns on, it has to start the system, background services and apps again, check its network connection and perform other resource-intensive tasks. At that moment, the load on components and the battery can be higher than during normal standby use. That is why frequent restarts should not become a daily ritual.
There is also a practical point: a powered-off phone can be useless in an emergency. If someone needs to make an urgent call, request help or receive an important notification at night, the device will need extra time to boot. For quiet sleep without calls and messages, it is better to use silent mode or “Do Not Disturb” instead of switching the smartphone off.
