Android Auto 17.2: new update brings back random disconnects

Users report random disconnects after the latest Android Auto update. Some rollbacks help, but Google has not yet explained the new wave of failures.

Android Auto is once again drawing mass complaints over unstable behavior. Just a few weeks ago, Google released an update meant to fix disconnection issues, but now some users are facing a fresh wave of failures: the app suddenly loses its link to the phone, and in some cases the system becomes almost unusable.

Most complaints point to Android Auto 17.2.662404. According to APKMirror, the stable build was released on July 3. On Reddit, users say that after installing the update, the system started disconnecting from the car frequently, with outages lasting from a few seconds to several minutes. For some, Android Auto also crashes every time audio playback starts.

Judging by the reports, the issue is not limited to one smartphone brand or a specific Android version. Complaints are coming from owners of different devices, including non-Google models. That makes it difficult to tell what exactly is causing the failures: the new Android Auto version itself, Google Play services updates, or a mix of several factors.

Users who have already run into the problem are advising others not to rush into Android Auto 17.2. Some are trying to roll back to older builds, including 17.0, and for part of the affected crowd that really helps. But the workaround does not work for everyone, so there is no universal fix yet.

Similar reports have also appeared in Google Issue Tracker, although those are mostly tied to the Android 17 beta and may not be related to the wider Reddit complaints. Google has noticed some of the reports, but it has not yet given an official explanation for the new crashes.
