Despite layoffs across Xbox Game Studios, id Software reportedly remains independent and has started early work on a new DOOM title.
id Software was recently affected by layoffs across Xbox Game Studios, prompting fans to worry about the studio's future and its biggest franchises. However, a new report from The Verge suggests the team is not being turned into a support studio and is already in the early stages of developing the next DOOM game.
According to journalist Tom Warren, the layoffs do not mean id Software is abandoning major projects of its own. He said the studio continues to work on the future of DOOM, although almost no details are available yet. The title, setting, gameplay direction and possible release window remain unknown.
Following the cuts, id Software published a statement on X. The studio confirmed that employees were affected, but stressed that the layoffs were spread across different teams and that the company still has the specialists it needs to build the games and technology for which it is known.
The developers also noted that the current team size is comparable to the period when DOOM 2016 was created. That should offer some reassurance to players who feared that the restructuring would cost id Software its independence or leave it supporting other Xbox projects.
If the report is accurate, the new DOOM is still at too early a stage for a full announcement. QuakeCon in August remains the nearest event where the studio could reveal more about its plans.
