Huawei Mate XT2 could replace its Z-fold with a fully inward design

Patent images hint at a major redesign with an external screen, an inward-folding tri-fold body and rumored Kirin 9050 Pro hardware.

Patent images have surfaced online showing what is believed to be the Huawei Mate XT2, the company’s next tri-fold smartphone. The material was shared by insider Ice Universe and points to a major structural redesign compared with the Mate XT and Mate XTs.

According to the diagrams, the Mate XT2 may switch to a fully inward-folding layout instead of the previous Z-shaped design. The overall concept resembles the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold, although the folding sequence is different. The phone could combine a separate cover display with a large flexible internal screen, while part of the main panel remained exposed on its predecessors.

The patent drawings also show a circular camera module on the middle section of the body. The right-hand panel appears to carry the cover display, while the left section folds inward first. The right section then closes over it, leaving the flexible display completely protected inside the device.

Rumors suggest that the Huawei Mate XT2 will use the Kirin 9050 Pro chip and a battery larger than 6,000 mAh. It is also said to feature a triple rear camera system similar to the one used in the Huawei Mate X7. Huawei has not confirmed the specifications, launch date or price.

Earlier reports pointed to an October unveiling, while newer publications have mentioned September, so the timing remains uncertain. The patent itself dates back to 2023 and does not confirm the final design. If this layout reaches production, the new model will be more than a routine specification upgrade and could significantly rethink Huawei’s tri-fold smartphone concept.
