Pixel 11a surfaces in Google app code with a new bear-themed codename

A new reference in the Phone by Google beta strengthens earlier reports that Google is already developing the affordable Pixel 11a.

Google appears to have left a notable clue about the development of the Pixel 11a, the future affordable model in the Pixel 11 lineup. The code of the Phone by Google 230.0.946661649-publicbeta-pixel beta includes internal names for Pixel 11 devices, including a new designation: Formosan.

The flagship codenames were already known: Cubs for Pixel 11, Grizzly for Pixel 11 Pro, Kodiak for Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Yogi for Pixel 11 Pro Fold. All of them follow a bear theme. Formosan most likely refers to the Formosan black bear found in Taiwan and may be the codename for Pixel 11a.

This is not the first time the name has appeared. In May, sources cited by Android Headlines reported that Google’s upcoming affordable phone was being developed under the Formosan codename. The new discovery in Google’s own app strengthens the idea that Pixel 11a is already in development, although it is not an official confirmation.

A-series models usually arrive several months after the flagship Pixels. Pixel 9 debuted in August 2024, while Pixel 9a was announced the following spring. Pixel 10a arrived in March 2026, so if Google keeps a similar schedule, Pixel 11a could launch around March 2027, though no precise timing is available yet.

Pixel 11a specifications have not been revealed. After the fairly restrained Pixel 10a update, expectations include a newer chip, an improved camera and possibly a larger battery. For now, these are expectations rather than leaked specifications.
