Rockstar has detailed how boxed GTA 6 editions will work: PS5 codes are tied to specific regions, while Xbox codes can be activated worldwide.
Rockstar Games has explained the activation rules for boxed editions of Grand Theft Auto VI. Packages for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S will contain only a digital code rather than a disc. Regional restrictions will work differently across the two platforms. The game launches on November 19, 2026, with preload starting on November 12.
PlayStation 5 codes can only be activated on accounts registered in the corresponding region. For example, a code from a North American box will work with accounts in the United States and Canada, a UK code will work only in the United Kingdom, and a Japanese code will work only in Japan.
This creates a risk for buyers of imported editions. If the boxed copy's region does not match the region of the PlayStation Network account, the code may fail to activate. Rockstar recommends buying from retailers operating in the same region as the user's account.
Xbox versions do not have the same restriction: Rockstar states that codes for Microsoft's consoles are not region-locked. Xbox owners will therefore be able to buy imported boxed editions without worrying about account-country compatibility.
Japan has a separate condition: the GTA 6 code will remain valid for only 170 days from November 19, 2026 because of local requirements. Rockstar has not announced plans for a full disc release; the announced boxed edition is a package containing a download code.
