Windows 11 now works with compatible external fingerprint scanners

Microsoft has released the optional KB5101684 preview update for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. After installation, the build numbers change to 26100.8973 and 26200.8973, respectively. The package contains no security fixes and is not installed automatically: it is available in the optional updates section of Windows Update.

One of the most noticeable changes is in File Explorer. In the “Details” view, file sizes are now shown in suitable units—kilobytes, megabytes or gigabytes—instead of kilobytes only. Middle-clicking a folder in the address bar or on the Home page opens it in a new tab. Microsoft has also removed a gray flash during loading and fixed the Home page unexpectedly scrolling back to the top.

Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security now supports compatible external fingerprint scanners. This brings protected biometric sign-in to desktop PCs and other devices without a built-in sensor, including Copilot+ PCs. The feature is rolling out gradually, so it may not appear for everyone at once.

The update also improves searches for installed apps using partial names or misspellings, more reliably preserves the selected Start menu view and colors taskbar notification badges with the system accent color. Precision touchpad settings now include controls for scroll and zoom gesture speed, plus an accelerated scrolling mode.

Voice Access has gained Korean language support and a Voice Isolation mode that filters out other voices and background noise. KB5101684 also includes servicing stack update KB5101711 build 26100.8962, designed to make system package installation more reliable. At the time of publication, Microsoft had not reported any known issues with this release.
