Immersive Navigation makes obstructing buildings transparent, widens the route view before difficult maneuvers and explains alternative routes.
Tall buildings in Google Maps should no longer hide a complicated interchange or the exit a driver needs. In the new Immersive Navigation mode, objects become transparent before important maneuvers, while the map expands the route view in advance. This gives drivers more time to change lanes instead of reacting to a prompt at the last moment.
Google calls Immersive Navigation the biggest update to Google Maps navigation in more than a decade. The map renders buildings, overpasses and terrain in 3D, and as a turn approaches it can highlight lanes, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and stop signs. Gemini models analyze Street View imagery and aerial photography to build this more detailed scene.
This is more than the older switch for 3D buildings. Google Maps already had an option to show three-dimensional objects along a route, but Immersive Navigation adds smart zoom, transparency for objects blocking the view and clearer guidance before maneuvers.
The navigator also explains the difference between alternative routes. A faster option may use a toll road, while a longer one may avoid heavy traffic. Before departure, users can inspect the destination area through Street View, and on arrival see the entrance, nearby parking and the correct side of the street.
The rollout has started in the United States. Over the following months, Google plans to expand availability to compatible Android and iOS devices, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in. As a result, identical app versions may temporarily show different interfaces on two phones or infotainment systems.
Google is also developing the Gemini voice assistant in parallel. In Android Auto, it already supports natural-language conversations, route follow-up questions and searches for places along the way. In vehicles with Google built-in, the assistant can use information about a specific model's equipment, for example to identify dashboard indicators or estimate whether a large item will fit in the trunk. This is a separate direction, although Gemini technology is also used to create the 3D map.
The new visualization does not replace road signs or lane markings: accuracy and availability depend on the region, vehicle and feature support. The main benefit is seeing the layout of a difficult intersection earlier and preparing for a lane change before it becomes urgent.
