Tap to Share could let Android users start Quick Share transfers by bringing two phones together, without manually choosing a recipient.
Google continues developing Tap to Share for Android, a feature designed to make file sharing more like Apple AirDrop. Insider Ice Universe reported the development on August 3, 2026. Components found in Android suggest users may be able to start a transfer simply by bringing two phones close together or tapping them. Quick Share would then handle the transfer, likely removing the need to find the receiving device manually.
The change should reduce the number of steps needed to exchange files and make the process noticeably faster. With Quick Share today, the sender usually has to select the right device from a list of available recipients. The traditional Quick Share workflow is expected to remain available.
The feature has not been officially announced and is still in development. References found in Android code and system services only point to possible future changes and do not guarantee that Tap to Share will appear in a public Android release.
