Samsung unveils Galaxy XR mixed reality headset with Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, dual 4K micro‑OLED, Gemini AI, Wi‑Fi 7, 16GB RAM—priced at $1,799 in the US.
The tech giant has officially unveiled Galaxy XR, a first‑generation mixed reality headset developed in partnership with Google and Qualcomm. It is already on sale in the United States for $1,799, positioning it as a more affordable alternative to Apple’s Vision Pro.
Built on the Android XR platform, Galaxy XR runs on the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset, delivering the muscle needed for 3D content, spatial video, and AI-powered features. The headset uses two 4K micro‑OLED displays with a resolution of 3552x3840 pixels, a 109‑degree field of view, and coverage of 96 percent of the DCI‑P3 color space. Users can choose between 60, 72, or 90 Hz refresh rates.
Samsung has clearly prioritized comfort. A framed design shifts pressure between the forehead and the back of the head, and the 545‑gram weight makes the device noticeably lighter than Vision Pro. There’s also a detachable light shield for complete isolation from ambient light, a practical touch for longer sessions.
The headset is packed with optics and sensors: six external cameras, four eye‑tracking cameras with iris recognition, two high‑resolution passthrough cameras, and a 6.5‑megapixel sensor for shooting 3D photos and videos. It also includes five inertial measurement units along with depth and flicker sensors.
Google’s Gemini AI is integrated at the system level to assist in everyday use. It can recognize objects, plot routes in Google Maps, surface content on YouTube, and even generate spatial versions of 2D photos and videos. Samsung and Google present Gemini as a new kind of companion that supports the user across both digital and physical spaces.
Galaxy XR supports Wi‑Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 and comes with 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. A separate battery delivers up to two hours of use, or up to two and a half hours when watching video, and it can power the device while charging.
Early buyers get 12 months of Google AI Pro, YouTube Premium, and Google Play Pass. Samsung has also released a Galaxy XR controller and a travel case, each priced at $250, a nudge toward a more complete ecosystem out of the box.
According to the company, Galaxy XR will serve as the foundation for a new family of devices, including AI‑powered smart glasses being developed with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. That direction suggests ambitions well beyond a single headset.
