Apple may add a variable aperture to the iPhone 18 Pro's 48MP main camera, enabling manual control and wider telephoto apertures for better low-light and bokeh.
Apple plans to equip the iPhone 18 Pro with a variable aperture on its main camera. A source known as Digital Chat Station says the 48‑megapixel Fusion primary camera on both iPhone 18 Pro models will support an adjustable aperture, and the telephoto lenses are expected to move to wider apertures as well.
A variable aperture changes the physical size of the lens opening—widening to capture more light in low‑light scenes or stopping down for bright conditions and a deeper plane of focus. In practice, that gives users greater control over depth of field, whether they want to nail focus more precisely on a subject or lean into a softer background blur reminiscent of pro DSLRs.
Until now, the iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro, and 17 Pro have relied on a fixed f/1.78 aperture. On the iPhone 18 Pro, it could be adjusted manually—marking the first time iPhone offers direct control over aperture and signaling a clear shift toward more hands‑on shooting options.
