Google tests a minimalist power-saving mode in Google Maps for Android that keeps navigation running with grayscale UI and voice guidance when battery is low.

Google is testing a new Google Maps option designed to keep navigation alive precisely when you need it most — for instance, when your phone battery is nearly empty. An experimental power-saving mode with a radically simplified interface has been spotted in the latest beta build of the Android app.

Code strings suggest the mode can be toggled via the phone’s power button, without switching on the system-level Battery Saver. Once activated, the screen shifts to grayscale and almost all UI elements fade away — you’re left with the route map and only the bare essentials in text. A small notice appears at the bottom to confirm the mode is on.

The feature supports walking, driving, and motorcycling navigation. It’s not yet clear whether it will extend to public transit, as the ultra-minimal layout may be unable to show route numbers. Voice guidance remains available so drivers can rely on audio prompts.

The idea makes obvious sense for anyone caught on the move with a dying battery. At this stage, though, the implementation still feels rough: some interface pieces vanish entirely, including street names. Google will likely keep refining the concept before folding it into a stable release of Google Maps.
