Samsung's new 200-megapixel ISOCELL HPA sensor details and features

If insider reports are accurate, Samsung is working on a new 200-megapixel sensor called ISOCELL HPA, which could be the largest in its portfolio. The unveiling is slated for 2027. This move aims to bolster Samsung's standing against Sony and OmniVision, rivals that already supply large 1-inch sensors for smartphones.

Leaked details indicate the ISOCELL HPA will measure 1/1.12 inches, covering about 89% of a 1-inch sensor's area. That puts it on par with Sony's LYT-901, the Japanese firm's debut 200-megapixel sensor, and Samsung's own 50-megapixel ISOCELL GN2. Until now, Samsung's 200-megapixel offerings have trailed key competitors in physical size.

A standout feature may be support for LOFIC technology, which stands for Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor. Sensors with this capability deliver a much wider dynamic range, capturing detail in both bright highlights and deep shadows without overexposure or loss. This matters especially for video and high-contrast scenes where balance is crucial.

Insiders add that the ISOCELL HPA will probably feature in flagship models from Chinese brands bearing the Ultra suffix. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S27 Ultra is expected to get a different sensor—the ISOCELL HP6, with a 1/1.3-inch format and 200 megapixels. Despite its smaller dimensions, rumors hint its performance could match up thanks to advanced processing. An upgrade to a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera is also in the cards.
