Apple's 20th-anniversary iPhone tipped for under-display camera and all-screen design

Apple is reportedly gearing up for its biggest iPhone design refresh in a decade. According to Digital Chat Station, the front-facing camera on the 2027 anniversary iPhone will sit entirely under the display. That lines up with earlier leaks hinting that the 20-year edition could feature a screen free of visible cutouts or the Dynamic Island.

The insider says development of the under-display camera is on schedule, with mass adoption planned for 2027—one year after the first under-panel solutions are expected to debut on the iPhone 18 Pro. Android manufacturers have been experimenting with this approach for years, but selfie quality remains a sticking point, which likely explains Apple’s slower rollout. Even so, the company is said to be refining its own system, and sources indicate the first under-display camera will appear in Apple’s inaugural foldable iPhone. If timing holds, the company seems determined to deliver an all-screen look without the usual trade-offs.

Earlier reports said LG Innotek is testing multi-lens under-screen modules with free-form optics designed to cut distortion and boost image brightness. The idea is to hide the camera with no lingering “window” when it’s inactive. It’s not yet clear whether this tech will make it into the foldable iPhone, but JP Morgan analysts expect the device to feature an unusual-for-under-display systems 24-megapixel camera—far above the typical 4–8MP range, a detail that points to a significant step forward if it materializes.

Beyond the camera, the anniversary iPhone may adopt a truly borderless display with rounded edges on all four sides. Apple is also expected to skip the “iPhone 19” name, echoing the 2017 move when it bypassed iPhone 9 and introduced iPhone X for the 10th anniversary—a choice that would neatly fit the company’s flair for milestone branding.
