Activate the Xbox Full Screen Experience on Windows 11 handhelds

Enthusiasts have figured out how to activate the Xbox Full Screen Experience on any handheld running Windows 11. Once a perk exclusive to the ASUS ROG Ally, the gaming interface can now be launched on virtually any Windows device via a third-party tool, including the Lenovo Legion Go and other portable PCs.

The mode turns Windows into a streamlined gaming shell with full controller support, minimal Explorer overhead, and an interface that mirrors the Xbox console menu. Microsoft initially aimed to keep it limited to select models, but the modding community responded with the Xbox Full Screen Experience Tool, unlocking functionality hidden in Windows 11.

The app arrives as a standard installer, automatically identifies the device type (handheld console, laptop, or PC), and applies the required system settings. After installation, users need to reboot, update the Xbox App and Xbox Game Bar, then enable Full Screen Experience in settings and set Xbox as the home app. The utility can roll back to the original configuration as well, though its developers advise caution: it tweaks low-level parameters, and that warning deserves attention.

The push to run an Xbox-style interface on any device has struck a chord with owners of Windows handhelds tired of waiting for official support. By most accounts, the new shell makes these machines feel much closer to a true portable Xbox—another small nudge toward bringing the Windows and Xbox ecosystems closer together.
