GPD Win 5 Debuts with AMD Strix Halo, 2K OLED and 16-Core Power

GPD has officially unveiled the Win 5, a handheld gaming console that stands out as the first portable system powered by AMD’s Strix Halo chip. The company describes it as the fastest device of its kind, and its specifications back up that claim: a 16-core Zen 5 CPU, Radeon 8060S graphics with 40 compute units, up to 128 GB of LPDDR5X memory, and a 7-inch OLED display delivering 2K resolution, a 120 Hz refresh rate, 6 ms response time, and full sRGB coverage.

One of the most unusual aspects of the Win 5 is its lack of a built-in battery. Instead, it relies on external, swappable 80 Wh battery packs or a 180 W power adapter. The manufacturer has showcased how the battery can be replaced in seconds — even mid-game. This design choice has sparked debate, with some praising its convenience while others question its practicality.

The device features a Frostwind cooling system with two fans and four heat pipes, supports NVMe storage of up to 4 TB, microSD cards up to 2 TB, and the use of external GPUs. Controls include capacitive sticks with no dead zones and Hall effect triggers boasting 0.1 mm precision.

Although the console has been officially announced, the GPD Win 5 will not hit the market until September, and the company has yet to reveal its price.
