Google Play introduces an XR category for headsets, helping Samsung Galaxy XR users

Google Play has added a new category for XR devices, and the first clear beneficiary is the recently launched Samsung Galaxy XR — a mixed-reality headset powered by Android XR, co-developed by Samsung and Google. The change makes it easier to navigate the store and find software tuned specifically for XR hardware.

Open an app page in Google Play and scroll down, and you’ll see a horizontal list of supported device types. The lineup now includes an 'XR Headset' entry, which lets you view ratings and reviews for the version tailored to XR headsets. That level of detail helps Galaxy XR owners gauge how well a given app performs in a mixed-reality environment. It’s a small tweak with outsized practical value.

The XR category has also appeared under the 'Other devices' section on the top tab bar in the Apps and Games pages. Previously, that area covered watches, TV, Chromebook, tablets, and Windows PCs. Adding XR broadens the platform’s visibility and streamlines the search for compatible content.

According to Android Authority, this prominent placement in the Google Play interface not only makes life easier for Galaxy XR owners but also fuels interest in the device class itself. The outlet notes that it could boost demand for headsets, strengthening Samsung, the Android XR ecosystem, and the wider mixed-reality market.

The Google Play update with XR classification has already rolled out globally and is available to all users.
