Samsung invests $1.9B to upgrade Austin chip plant for advanced sensors

Samsung plans to pour an additional $1.9 billion into its chip plant in Austin, Texas. According to Money Today Korea, the funding will go toward overhauling the site and installing new tools needed to produce advanced semiconductors, including camera sensors that may end up in future Apple devices. The move reads as a bid to sharpen the factory’s competitive edge in the U.S.

While neither company is sharing details of any partnership, industry sources say the work could focus on a new ultra-wide 1/2.6-inch sensor for the iPhone 18 and subsequent models.

Samsung previously received tax subsidies from the U.S. government after bringing its Texas manufacturing online. With the new investment, the Austin site could retain its Texas Enterprise Project designation. A city council vote is slated for November 20.

Meanwhile, construction continues on Samsung’s new facility in Taylor, where production of 2 nm chips is set to start soon. It is already known that one of the key customers will be Tesla, tapping the plant for its AI6 processors.
