HMD, the company that once ran Nokia’s mobile business before pivoting to its own smartphones and tablets, now appears ready to step into the PC arena. According to insider @smashx_60, HMD is developing a device called the HMD Book CS-1 Flip—its first laptop and, at the same time, a convertible Chromebook. The Flip name suggests a rotating hinge and a touchscreen, putting the newcomer up against the likes of ASUS’s Chromebook Flip and other 2-in-1 machines.
Over the past few years, HMD has steadily widened its catalog—from straightforward feature phones to Android tablets and accessories. A full-fledged notebook, though, would be a fundamentally new chapter. Laptops bearing the Nokia name did show up in the past, but they were made by a licensed third-party partner that shut down long ago. Now HMD seems poised to put its own brand into the PC segment, and the timing feels like a logical next step.
Details are scarce for now, but the leak claims the CS-1 Flip will be powered by an Intel processor. That choice stands out, as many budget Chromebooks opt for ARM-based chips such as MediaTek’s Kompanio. The display size, exact CPU, memory options, storage configurations, and pricing remain under wraps. It’s also unclear which audience HMD intends to target with its first notebook.
Even so, the appearance of a full product name hints that the project has moved beyond early rumor territory. If the device is real, it could become a meaningful milestone for HMD after stepping away from exclusive reliance on the Nokia brand. Official details, it seems, may not be far off—and this launch could quietly test how much pull HMD’s own name has in the PC space.
