After the launch of the Samsung Galaxy XR—the first Android XR device with full support for immersive 3D content—Google began rolling out 3D movies on Google Play. Users have noticed new titles appearing in the store, available to buy or rent for viewing on the Galaxy XR and other upcoming headsets powered by Android XR. The rollout reads like an early move to give the platform’s first users something meaningful to watch.
The 3D catalog is expanding at a brisk pace: where a few days ago it featured around 18 entries, it now lists more than fifty. Among the available films are “GI Joe 2: Vengeance,” “Monsters on Vacation” (including sequels), “How to Train Your Dragon,” “The Timekeeper,” “Jumanji: The Next Level,” “Jurassic World: Resurrection,” “Passengers,” “Pixels,” “Resident Evil: Retribution,” “No Time to Die,” “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” and many others.
It remains unclear which of these releases support 4K or HDR, and in which regions the 3D versions can be watched. Still, Google had signaled at the Galaxy XR debut that expanding 3D content was on its roadmap, and that effort is now officially underway. The direction feels logical: without a steady stream of films, even advanced headsets risk gathering dust.
The Galaxy XR headset, like Apple Vision Pro, supports MV-HEVC decoding, enabling playback of a full-fledged 3D video format. For now, Apple’s library is considerably larger—more than 300 films—so Google will need to keep scaling its catalog to close the gap.
