Sony is lining up a welcome twist for players: Insider Gaming reports that the PlayStation 6 will support a detachable disc drive from day one. For context, the PlayStation 5 landed in 2020 in two flavors—with a built-in Blu-ray and a digital-only model. The separate plug-in drive appeared only midway through the console’s life. This time, the modular idea will be baked into the launch strategy.
This design lets Sony simplify production and trim the main unit’s footprint. A lighter, more compact base is easier to ship, cutting logistics costs—crucial at global scale. Players can pick a digital model or a bundle with the drive, and they’ll have the option to add the disc unit later if they decide to return to physical media.
For collectors and disc diehards, the proposition looks especially appealing. There’s no need to pay extra for a boxed-in drive up front—you can start with the digital variant and expand when it makes sense. It also simplifies upkeep: if the drive fails, it can be swapped on its own, without replacing the entire console.
The challenge for Sony will be to nail compatibility and warranty support so the drive never feels like a bolted-on, third-party-style add-on. If everything goes to plan, the PlayStation 6 could emerge as a more flexible, modular platform—one that keeps discs in the conversation for another generation, even as the industry leans toward going fully digital.
