Samsung accelerates in-house GPU for Exynos 2800, phasing out AMD by 2027

Samsung is preparing a notable stride toward technological independence in mobile silicon. According to The Korea Economic Daily, the company is accelerating development of its own graphics processor and plans to phase out third-party GPUs as soon as 2027. The first chip expected to feature fully in-house graphics is the Exynos 2800, a move that would signal a clear push to own more of the Exynos stack.

Today, Samsung’s mid-range and flagship mobile processors rely on Xclipse graphics built on AMD’s RDNA architecture. Shifting to proprietary GPU IP would cut reliance on partners and give the company more latitude to shape features, performance, and device-level optimization. The intent is easy to read here: tighter control over graphics should translate into a cleaner path to tune silicon around Samsung’s own hardware priorities.

Samsung treats the GPU effort as a long-term strategy. The plan begins with smartphones and then extends to smart glasses, robotics, automotive systems, and other specialized products. Over time, the company intends to apply its graphics work to AI accelerators and dedicated ASIC chips. If the roadmap holds, it would rank among the most significant changes to the Exynos ecosystem in recent years, with a methodical approach that starts on phones and scales once the technology proves itself.
