Apple Watch 2026 May Introduce Touch ID and New Design

Apple is preparing one of the biggest updates yet for its smartwatch lineup. References found in the company’s source code point to the integration of Touch ID in future Apple Watch models. According to the data, the biometric authentication feature is being developed under the internal codename AppleMesa and is intended for devices planned for 2026. This suggests the technology is still at a prototype stage, but active work is underway.

What remains unclear is how Apple will implement the fingerprint scanner. The company’s patents outline several possibilities, including a sensor built into the side button, one placed beneath the display, or even a system located on the back of the case. Any of these approaches could simplify unlocking and strengthen Apple Pay security by eliminating the need to enter a passcode manually.

The code also indicates that the 2026 models are listed under the designation Watch8, pointing to a major redesign and the introduction of a new T8320 processor. In contrast, the current and upcoming generations—Series 9, 10, and 11—fall within the Watch7 family and rely on the T8310 architecture. Reports from DigiTimes had previously mentioned that Apple was preparing a significant overhaul in both design and sensors, and the new findings lend further weight to that claim.

For now, users are awaiting the next wave of Apple Watch releases—Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3—set to debut this September. According to insiders, these models will retain the familiar design while offering updated communication modules. However, the more transformative innovations appear to be reserved for the 2026 generation.
