ASUS ROG XREAL R1 AR gaming glasses: 240 Hz Micro-OLED and a 171-inch virtual screen

ASUS opened CES 2026 with the announcement of an unusual gaming device: the ROG XREAL R1 AR glasses, developed in collaboration with XREAL. Instead of a massive physical monitor, they promise a virtual screen measuring up to 171 inches, appearing at roughly four meters away.

The headline feature is a Micro-OLED display at Full HD resolution (1920×1080) paired with a 240 Hz refresh rate, a record for this form factor. ASUS positions the ROG XREAL R1 AR as the first gaming glasses to offer such specifications. The field of view reaches 57 degrees, and the virtual image covers up to 95% of the focused vision zone, helping it feel like a true large-format monitor.

Multimedia did not go unnoticed. The glasses integrate an audio system with Bose technologies for spatial 3D sound. Electrochromic lenses automatically adjust transparency based on ambient light and the direction of gaze, while manual control lets the wearer fine-tune dimming for different scenarios.

The package includes the ROG Control Dock with DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0, making it easy to switch between a PC and game consoles. The glasses also work with portable devices such as the ASUS ROG Ally and connect via USB-C, turning a handheld console into a full-fledged gaming setup with an enormous virtual screen.

ASUS has not disclosed pricing for the ROG XREAL R1 AR yet but confirmed sales will start in the first half of 2026. On paper, the message is straightforward: replace the physical panel with a virtual canvas without sacrificing speed.
