Microsoft is still securing rights to its brands in Russia, even after pausing its local operations. In the opening days of 2026, the company registered the Magentic trademark in the country. The application was filed on September 30, 2025, with registration completed on January 4. Exclusive rights to the mark will remain in force until autumn 2035.
Throughout 2025, Microsoft stayed notably active in safeguarding its intellectual property. Over that period, the company filed 27 trademark applications in Russia and obtained registrations for three earlier filings. The applications covered brands such as Bing, Azure, and Visual Studio, as well as the game titles Wasteland and State of Decay. Some filings—including Microsoft, Windows, Excel, and Xbox—were still under review as the year closed.
Most of these marks are registered under Nice Classes 09 and 42, which cover software and IT services. Several applications also fall under Classes 35 and 41, related to managing online platforms and providing entertainment services, including video games. Earlier, Microsoft had also applied to Rospatent to register Microsoft 365 and Halo.
This trademark activity stands out against the company’s decision in spring 2022 to suspend sales and services in Russia. Even so, registrations continue—an approach that helps Microsoft retain legal control over its core brand names in the market and signals a clear intent to keep its portfolio orderly and defensible.
