2026 Tesla Model Y adds seven-seat option to Premium AWD Long Range

Tesla has added a seven-seat configuration to the refreshed 2026 Model Y in its online configurator. The extra row costs $2,500 and is available only with the Premium All-Wheel-Drive Long Range trim. The company had previously hinted at bringing the layout back, promising more room for both passengers and cargo.

Judging by the configurator visuals, the third row is primarily aimed at children, as legroom appears limited. Tesla notes that the seven-seat interior features second- and third-row seats that fold flat, though it remains unclear whether the third row gets power-folding like the second. In practice, this looks like seating for occasional use rather than a full-time three-row setup.

The return of this option comes as competition in the crossover and SUV market tightens, alongside another quarterly decline in Tesla’s sales. A seven-seat Model Y was previously offered in the U.S. but was pulled after the facelift early last year, leaving American buyers with only the five-seat configuration. In China, Tesla introduced the extended six-seat Model YL in August 2025, while Elon Musk indicated it might reach the U.S. only by late 2026—or not at all. Against that backdrop, expanding the Model Y’s versatility feels like a timely attempt to hold buyer interest.

Elsewhere, changes to the Model Y lineup are minimal and mainly touch the Premium version: new 20-inch dark gray Helix wheels, a black headliner, a larger 16-inch display with higher resolution, and darkened rear badges. Incremental tweaks, but enough to sharpen the overall package without altering what made the model popular.
