Samsung continues to strengthen its position as one of the world's most technologically active players, focusing not only on finished products but also on protecting future ideas. The company has maintained its leadership in the number of patents granted in the United States for several consecutive years, and 2025 was no exception.
According to the annual study by analytical firm IFI Claims, Samsung received 7,054 patents in 2025, which is 11% more than the previous year. This means the South Korean giant accounted for about 2% of all patents issued in the United States for the year. For comparison, in 2024, Samsung received 6,377 patents, already topping the ranking at that time.
Second place went to Taiwan's TSMC—a key competitor of Samsung in the semiconductor sector—with 4,194 patents. Apple, one of Samsung's main rivals in the mobile device market, ranked fourth with 2,722 patents, a noticeable decrease from its 2024 figure.
It's important to note that not all of Samsung's patented developments reach commercial implementation. However, this strategy allows the company to stake out technological directions that may become relevant in the future. Moreover, an extensive patent portfolio reduces the risks of legal disputes and protects Samsung from potential claims by patent trolls.
The high patent activity directly indicates the company's massive investments in research and development. In practice, Samsung is creating a foundation for years ahead, building the groundwork for new products and technologies that may emerge when the market is ready for them.
