OpenAI's new AI device Sweetpea set for 2026 launch with high sales

OpenAI has officially confirmed plans to launch its first mass-market consumer AI device. According to the company, the new product will debut in the second half of 2026, with first-year sales potentially reaching 40–50 million units. Rumors suggest this involves smart earbuds internally codenamed Sweetpea.

OpenAI's director of global affairs, Chris Lehane, shared initial project details during the World Economic Forum in Davos. He emphasized that developing its own AI device is a key strategic direction and a top priority for 2026. Taiwan's Economic Daily adds that the release could happen as early as September, with manufacturing likely entrusted to Foxconn using its facilities in Vietnam.

Leaks indicate Sweetpea will heavily rely on cloud data processing, while some tasks will be handled locally via a 2nm Samsung Exynos chip. Designed for constant AI interaction, the device aims to be a next-generation personal assistant.

Simultaneously, OpenAI is working on another form factor: a compact, screenless device codenamed Gumdrop. Equipped with cameras and microphones for contextual environmental analysis, it can recognize handwritten notes and upload them directly to ChatGPT, operating either autonomously or with cloud support. While not wearable in the traditional sense, it can be carried in a pocket or worn around the neck. Launch is expected in 2026 or 2027.
