Apple has officially unveiled the second-generation AirTag, marking the company's first major hardware update this year. After nearly five years since the original version launched, the new AirTag 2 features significant improvements in both its internal components and capabilities, while maintaining the same $29 price point.
A key upgrade is the second-generation ultra-wideband chip, which is also used in the iPhone 17 lineup and the latest Apple Watch models. This chip enables faster and more reliable precise finding, with detection range increasing by approximately 50%. The updated Bluetooth module also extends the radius for locating lost items.
The AirTag 2 is noticeably louder, with its built-in speaker now about 1.5 times more powerful. This allows the alert sound to be heard from twice the distance compared to before. Additionally, Apple has expanded support for the Precision Finding feature, making it available not only on iPhone but also on recent Apple Watch generations, further enhancing search convenience.
Apple has placed particular emphasis on security and protection against unwanted tracking. The company states it has implemented a set of new mechanisms, including cross-platform notifications and constantly changing Bluetooth identifiers, to ensure AirTag is used exclusively for finding items rather than tracking people or animals.
The AirTag 2 is already available for pre-order, with deliveries set to begin in the coming days. Alongside the single unit for $29, Apple offers a four-pack for $99, and free personal engraving remains included in the price.
